Recently, the Spanish Institute of Photonics (ICFO) published a study in the journal Nature Physics , saying that nanodiamonds can be used as independent ultra-fast optical switch emitters at room temperature. Electronic transistors are an important electronic component in modern electronic technology, which greatly improves the speed of information processing in the prior art. The so-called electronic transistor is a semiconductor device for converting and amplifying an electronic signal. Nowadays, optical transistors have replaced traditional electronic technology and become the core technology of optical signal processing. On the one hand, photons have faster dynamic properties, and on the other hand, because of the weak interaction of photons with the surrounding environment; this makes high integration techniques and quantum operations possible.
Previous studies have found that a single dye molecule can also act as an optical transistor, but dye molecules can only function at ultra-low temperatures. Ultra-low temperature conditions greatly limit the application of quantum computing.
The latest research by ICFO found that nanodiamond can effectively act as a controllable optical switch at room temperature. A nitrogen-containing impurities nanodiamonds as an artificial atom, since the effect of the package (encapsulation), at room temperature, it is more stable than the true atoms. ICFO scientists have discovered a novel physical mechanism for controlling the reaction of nanodiamonds with light. The green laser activates the diamond to make it open, and the appropriate infrared illumination makes it effectively and quickly in an off state. Given this basic concept, the researchers modulate the switching state of the optical nanodiamond under ultra-high speed conditions, verifying its Stability and feasibility for high-speed quantum computing and high-speed information processing technology.
ICFO researcher Qquidant commented: This nano-diamond optical switch is small in size, fast in response, and operating at room temperature.
