The Inverted Deformed Multiple Junction (IMM) solar technology developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) has improved energy efficiency at reduced costs and will be used primarily in military space applications.
The multi-layered light-absorbing material of each cell means that it can convert specific wavelengths of the solar spectrum into energy.
The IMM battery is said to be 15% higher power than similar standard multijunction solar arrays.
Developers said that new solar cells can be used to solve the efficiency problems and popular needs of the space community, and to release more satellite space for other tools.
"We have found that by inverting epitaxial cells on gallium arsenide, we can more effectively adjust the material properties of each absorber layer," said Kerry Bennington, an electronics engineer at AFRL's Materials and Manufacturing Division.
