An innovative technique from a team of researchers at North Carolina State University uses light heat to easily convert 2D plastic sheets into 3D objects.
The principle of operation is to first print a bold black line on a pre-stressed plastic sheet, which can be an ordinary ink jet printer. Because the difference in color causes the black to absorb heat more easily, after the infrared light is emitted from the heat lamp, the heat on the plastic sheet is not balanced and shrinks and forms the opening and closing effect like a hinge on the door. After many similar processes, the plastic sheet is folded into a 3D object, and the original flat plastic sheet becomes a cube.
In the absence of direct contact with the material by hand, the 3D form created is also more abundant, and finally it can mass-produce the same 3D object. As the width and length of the black line change, the folding angle of the hinge will also change, so the structure of the 3D object will be more complicated.
