Prof. Zhai Zili, Institute of Atomic and Molecular Physics, Sichuan University, presented the technical report titled “Investigation on the Performance of Continuous Cutting of Granite in PCD Tools†at this Superhard Materials Technology Development Forum. The paper is summarized as follows: Three kinds of self-made PCD tools PCD005, PCD010, PCD030 (representing the original average grain size of 5um, 10um, 30um, respectively) were used to carry out the continuous wet cutting test of granite at three speeds. On this basis, the microscopic features of the front and back flank of the tool were observed. The failure mechanism of the tool was analyzed. The cutting life of the tool under different grain sizes and different cutting conditions was compared. The measurement results of the flank wear of the tool show that the coarse-grained PCD tool shows a longer cutting life under the three cutting speed conditions; the life of the three tools decreases with the increase of the cutting speed; The electronic image shows that for PCD010 and PCD005, the wear of the tool is mechanical wear of the hard point. For the PCD030 with coarse grain, the main wear mechanism is mechanical wear, accompanied by the occurrence of transgranular wear.
The main wear of the PCD tool occurs on the flank of the tool, and the rake face is substantially free of damage. The cutting performance of three different grain size diamond tools at different cutting speeds was studied experimentally. By measuring the flank wear, the coarse-grained diamond tools showed better cutting performance at three cutting speeds. The life of all three tools is reduced as the cutting speed increases.
