Swiss scientists use flexible electronics to restore damaged spinal cord

The EPFL in Lausanne published a paper in the journal Science, which states that artificial ridges with micro-channels for electrical wiring and chemicals are implanted in the spinal cord of rats unable to walk due to spinal cord injury. â€œe-Duraâ€ (dura is a dura that coats the surface of the brain and spinal cord), restored the ability to walk in rats (thesis link). According to reports, e-Dura did not cause spinal cord injury and inflammation. Using cracked gold wiring

The technology was developed by Professor Stephanie P. Lacour of EPFL's Flexible Bio-Electronic Interface Laboratory. Prof. Lacour et al. embedded electrical wiring in a flexible silicone circuit board and succeeded in providing resistance and flexibility to withstand bending, stretching and twisting. The electrical wiring material uses gold (Au), and by adding a large number of cracks from the beginning, the flexibility is achieved. The electrode consists of a large number of fine particles composed of a mixture of silicon and platinum (Pt). Just like particle-filled pillows, you can flexibly achieve any shape.

Lacour et al. transplanted e-Dura into the subdural spinal cord of rats unable to walk due to spinal cord injury, and then applied electrical signals and chemical stimuli together with rehabilitation. After about two weeks, the rats recovered their walking ability. "After two months of recovery, the rats were still healthy and did not cause spinal cord injury and inflammation" (EPFL).
