On the 19th, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (hereinafter referred to as the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology), the National Development and Reform Commission, and the Ministry of Science and Technology jointly issued the "Guiding Opinions on the Application of Methanol Vehicles in Some Areas" (hereinafter referred to as "Guidance Opinions"), clearly indicating It is necessary to adhere to local conditions, actively and steadily, safely and controllably develop methanol vehicles in areas with applicable conditions.
The "Guidance Opinions" pointed out that the focus is on the application of M100 methanol vehicles in areas with good resource endowment conditions and experience in methanol vehicle operation in Shanxi, Shaanxi, Guizhou and Gansu. It also encourages the use of methanol vehicles in the areas of official business, rental, and short-distance passenger transportation in conditional areas. The relevant regions should actively create conditions for the application of methanol vehicles, and give preferential policies for the purchase and operation of methanol vehicles that meet the requirements of China's sixth-stage motor vehicle pollutant emission standards and methanol vehicle emission limits.
The data show that methanol is used as a substitute fuel for vehicles. It has the characteristics of low carbon, high oxygen content and high octane number, which is beneficial to full combustion and can effectively improve engine power. The domestic research and development and application of methanol vehicles began in the late 1970s. Experts said that this "Guidance Opinion" will promote China's auto industry to diversify from power diversification to fuel diversification. At present, China's energy structure is dominated by coal, of which more than 40% are high-sulfur inferior coal, which is not suitable for direct use in power generation or manufacturing, but can be used to produce methanol. Promoting the development of methanol vehicles is in line with China's national conditions.
Wei Anli, member of the Expert Committee of China Internal Combustion Engine Industry Association: High-sulfur coal, and some coal gangue, used it as methanol. Coal is a raw material for methanol, but it is a by-product accessory in the coal industry, or something that can't be used to make methanol. It cannot be said that it is all waste utilization, but it is completely a circular economy.
In fact, since 2012, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has worked with relevant departments in Jinzhong, Changzhi, Shanghai, Xi'an, Baoji, Yulin, Hanzhong, Guiyang, Lanzhou and Pingliang in five provinces of Shanxi, Shanghai, Shaanxi, Guizhou and Gansu. In 10 cities, the pilot project of methanol vehicles was organized. By the end of the pilot in 2018, a total of 1024 methanol vehicles were put into operation, with a total mileage of more than 184 million kilometers, a maximum of more than 350,000 kilometers of bicycles, and a cumulative consumption of more than 24,000 tons of methanol fuel.
Moreover, after years of development, a number of automobile and engine manufacturing enterprises such as Geely Automobile, Shaanxi Heavy Duty Truck, Yutong Automobile, and FAW Jingwei have owned the proprietary technology of methanol vehicles and have the independent development capability of methanol vehicles. And the overall technical equipment level of domestic methanol vehicles has been at the international leading level.
As everyone knows, Li Shufu, chairman of Geely Automobile, is the “first mover†of methanol vehicles. As of 2019, Li Shufu has put forward four suggestions on “promoting methanol fuel and methanol vehicles†at the two sessions. According to the official website of the National Automobile Standardization Technical Committee on March 22, the automotive industry standard “Test Method for Fuel Consumption of Methanol Fuel Vehicles†has completed the draft for comments and has received feedback. It is worth noting that the main drafting unit of this "Method" is the vehicle enterprise - Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Co., Ltd., which means that Geely Automobile will play a key role in the formulation of this standard.
It is reported that the feedback time for this consultation is as of April 15, 2019. The implementation of this standard will help to accurately test and evaluate the fuel consumption of methanol vehicles, and convert the methanol fuel consumption into a considerable amount of gasoline or diesel consumption through the equivalent calorific value method, and incorporate it into the “double integral†assessment system. Promote the development of methanol vehicles.
