Solar photovoltaic efficiency has always been limited by the bottleneck of the conversion rate, but recently, the conversion rate of high concentrating solar cells (HCPV) manufactured by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) using III-V compounds has been exceeded, setting a new conversion rate of 44%. The solar photovoltaic technology will be further pushed forward.
HCPV solar cells are made of III-V compounds, such as gallium arsenide, and they match solar tracking systems, high-concentration lenses, and other components to project sunlight onto wafers with multiple benefits, which can effectively increase the power generation efficiency per unit area. Installed in areas with a short day of sunshine, installation in the short-day environment can still create the same amount of power generation, which has a wider range of applications than silicon solar cells.
According to the latest research results of NREL, a three-layer HCPV battery can create 43.5% conversion efficiency in a 415-fold spotlight environment, and 44% in a 947-times sunlight spotlight environment. The conversion rate not only succeeded in breaking through the natural 42-43% conversion rate of the previous HCPV power generation system, but the conversion rate figure was far higher than that of the silicon solar cell, which often had a conversion rate of less than 25%.
With the increase of conversion efficiency, the higher unit production cost of HCPV solar cells has gradually become close to Si Solar in terms of the unit cost of power generation, and has become another alternative energy option with considerable benefits in the market.
In fact, the domestic gallium arsenide wafer foundries, including Changyu (3105) and Acerco (8086), as well as the new epitaxial plant (2455) in the upstream, have all cut into the layout of solar cells and materials. As the HCPV solar energy supply chain has not yet fully matured, the penetration rate of the power plant terminals has not been effectively improved. At present, there is no apparent weight in the shipment of solar energy products from domestic gallium arsenide plants.
However, the industry is also happy to see that with the increase in the HCPV conversion rate and the further decline in the cost of electricity generation, it will help to gradually expand the shipment volume of HCPV products. The HCPV solar power generation market is still the application of 3G and 4G mobile communications in the GaAs industry. Another growth blue ocean with considerable growth potential.
