Water purification technology gives new meaning to coffee foam

Scientists have demonstrated through experimentation that waste coffee grounds can not only be used as road building materials for biodiesel production, but also can effectively remove heavy metal ions such as lead and mercury in water. A group of scientists led by the Genoa's Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia Institute of Technology in Italy developed a foam "filter" made from coffee grounds. This foam "filter" is made of 60% coffee grounds and 40% silicone elastomer.

The mixture dries to form a solidified shape and leaves pores, thereby forming a foamed body with a filtering effect.

In the experimental results, the researchers found that the foam filter successfully removed 99% of the mercury and lead in the static water within 30 hours. Even in flowing water, 67% of lead that is harmful to health has been successfully removed.

The research results were published in ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering.
