Bolt rod function


The bolt stem is the unthreaded bolt portion between the bolt head and the thread. The bolt rod has two main purposes: one is to increase the shear bearing capacity of the bolt rod; the other is to reduce the bolt rod and enhance the elasticity of the bolt.

Under shear load (as shown), the bolt experiences a force perpendicular to its axis. When the area of ​​the bolt is increased and there is no stress concentration point, the shear load performance of the bolt can be improved. Therefore, the designer should ensure that the shear plane passes through the bolt rather than the thread.

When bolts are used as tension bolts, they should be more flexible than joints. In high-performance bolts, the tension area of ​​the bolt rods may be minimized to accommodate the increase in stiffness due to high hardness, thereby ensuring that the bolts are relatively resilient. If the bolt fails due to cyclic bending such as eccentric load, replacing the original bolt with a waist bolt can improve the joint performance. Since the diameter of the waist bar is small, the fatigue stress can be reduced under the same bending state, thereby increasing the service life of the joint.
