Combustion-stabilizing efficiency delivers a cleaner "blue flame"

Humans have been playing with fire for thousands of years, but our taming of the "flame" is still far from the top. A research team at the University of Maryland, USA, has just discovered a new type of "flame tornado." They are affectionately called "blue whirls" because they can burn more cleanly, reduce carbon dioxide emissions, and use less air to burn leaking oil contaminants. Research co-author Michael Gollner said:

The "blue whirlpool - fire dragon roll" can make the fuel more fully burned, so it can also be used when cleaning up oil spills (so that the pollution of water and air is also less).

"Because of the devastating blow it will bring, the flame tornado has always been considered terrible. But like electricity, you can use it better after understanding it. This is also the first time we have studied the reality of the flame tornado. The reason for the use."

People are more familiar with the flames of bright yellow, but the goal of the research team is to observe the characteristics of fuel burning on the surface of the water. In the process, they noticed a type of blue flame vortex that had not previously been noticed.

The blue vortex burns more efficiently and stably, and the resulting emissions are much lower than bright yellow flames. Essay co-author Elaine Oran said:

The blue flame vortex evolved from the traditional bright yellow flame. The yellow flame is caused by the incomplete combustion of oxygen (emission of soot particles) due to insufficient oxygen.

Researchers called the new type of “fire dragon roll” “blue whirl” (blue whirlpool). Compared with bright yellow flames, it burns more efficiently.

This highly efficient combustion method can be used on oceans that are contaminated with leaked oil. Because crude oil will build up into a thick layer and burn out toxic fumes, it is obviously not very desirable.

If fully burned, pollutants released into the air and water bodies will be greatly reduced. However, one of the major hurdles in the process is to expand the blue vortex from a small version of a small laboratory to a larger one.

Gollner said: "The flame tornado's combustion efficiency is higher than other forms, because it can rapidly heat the fuel surface, thus achieving faster and more complete combustion."

In our surface experiments, we have seen how it rotates and how it can be used to make fuel. If we can expand the blue vortex to a larger scale, we can further reduce the emissions of clean-up gas when leaking oil.

To further improve fuel efficiency and environmental cleanliness, the laboratory will also set up a platform to study flame tornadoes and analyze them through fluid mechanics. According to Huahua Xiao, an assistant research scientist at the Department of Aeronautical Engineering at Clark University,

The flame tornado is usually chaotic, but the blue version is very quiet and stable, with no visible audible turbulence. This is indeed an exciting discovery that has brought important possibilities both inside and outside the laboratory.

This study has been published in the recently published "National Academy of Sciences" (PNAS).
